The Move
Thursday, October 20, 2011 - 01:13 AM
I've gotten the most heartfelt and wonderful e-mails, in the last week. About the move, about Gramp's reasons for it, how it'll impact Sheldon and the animals, about where this leaves Dante and Emily and Lil' Butter...
It's been this wonderful outpouring from you all. Thank you for that! I'm glad to see the storyline is really resonating for some of you. I care very much for Gramp 'n Sheldon and the whole family...and it's so nice to see that you do, too.

It will cost a lot for them to move and unless the dream home is in the neighbourhood everyone's life will be upset. Arthur is only the start. Will that pond still be accessible for swimming? Will Sheldon still be able to hang out with Dante? Even though I am a cat person losing Li'l Butter would not be a great loss, but Emily would be. (I don't think I've ever met a cat as vacuous as that.)I've watched people in our neighbourhood retire to some favourite summer place only to have major health problems set in before long time friendships could be developed. A number, widowed, have returned to our area. Gramps will need his neighbours as Sheldon grows up, the teen years are just ahead, and he'll need all the friendly support he can get. These are real people, you know, you can't just toss them around willy nilly.

If it means never having to see Lil' Butter in the comic again, all for the move lol :)

Yeah, I am a cat person and Lil' Butter ain't doin' it for me. Cats are sly, clever, occasionally manipulative, creatively lazy, and very aware of their dignity. I've never met a cat as dumb as... well, as dumb as a pug, frankly. ;)
Keep Emily by all means, but I think you could upgrade the cat. Literally, if you wanted a foil for Arthur. :D

Listen to you people, going on about Emily and Lil' Butter. Clearly the greatest loss is DANTE!!!!!! Why, Dave, Would this once constant companion of Sheldon's be used more and more rarely throughout the strip and now, or so it seems, abandoned completely!
Remember Dante!

Strude - Real people get tossed around all the time. If anything, this makes them more real.

I for one will miss Lil' Butter, since I am owned by a pug and a bugg, and no dog lover has had a problem with Ozo. Alot is very true about the pugs and we all laugh about it. I hope everyone will still be around with the big move and the house will turn out to be just a block or two away from the house they are at right now. Awesome job you do Dave!!!

maybe, since sheldon is loaded, he could do something nice like have a house built for him and the gang. there are all these references to him having lots of money but i don't really see anything he does with it. maybe he could ask gramps what he's looking for as a new house then build one!

Okay, this is INSANELY ironic. These past two weeks, as the comics about Sheldon's family moving have gone up, MY family has been in the process of moving! Unlike Sheldon, we moved across the country (from Minnesota to Florida), not across the town (at least, I hope they're only moving across town). I can relate to pretty much every one of the comics that have been up this week.

I hope the move doesn't happen! Everyone is comfortable, and all the new house would do is depress Gramp because he'd keep on thinking about his deceased wife.
I also think you have the cat's personality wrong. Cats are much more clever and sneaky.
But, as the owner of 4 rescue pugs (or maybe they own me?) I do think you have the pug's personality down pat! LOL

This. Ohmygoodness, this.
I would miss Dante a lot, and like Emily even though we haven't had much chance to see her yet.
And whatever happened to Sheldon's nerdy friends?
Still, it'll be fun to see Sheldon and family in a new setting.
(lil' butter, though...ah, no. Just...no. Please, no.)

Why can't they just buy the dream house and keep the old house too?

I'm still waiting to hear WHY they're moving. I mean, it's a dream house filled with memories and the market bites. I can't think of a single reason for them to move other than "it makes for a new plot line." I'd like to know WHY, please.

I keep hoping that cat will get run over by a bus.
I know why it's there: to show that Emily's got a weakness -- her blind love for her stupid cat. But no cat is that stupid. (You're probably a dog person, Dave, so just trust me on this one.) Unless the stupidity is all a clever charade by the cat for devious purposes of its own...
I love the "move" storyline and hope Gramps will be okay. (Sometimes having is not so good as wanting. It is not logical, but it is often true.)

I hope the new place is close enough that Sheldon can still play with his friends.
As to Li'l Butter, he does come across like he's got cerebellar hypoplasia or something. I'm glad there's a cat in the strip; have wanted it so for a long time, but Butter needs to smarten up a bit.

I LIKE Li'l Butter. And, just to make myself even more unpopular, I've always found Flaco mediocre and a bit of a Mary Sue. I know I'm in the minority here, though.

I was relieved to learn that they're not moving so far away as to leave Dante and Emily (and yes, Li'l Butter) behind.
And kudos to Mr. Kellett: I literally laughed out loud three times in a row with today's strip (10/28) when I saw that (1) Emily had written out an official BFF list on a clipboard, (2) Flaco was listed above Sheldon, and (3) that the list included "Not the duck" as an entry. Not bad for a visual gag that wasn't even the main punchline!

In this Friday's comic (10-28-2011), is Emily wearing a Homestar Runner shirt? If that's what it's meant to be, I would be very happy.

Interesting discussion about Li'l Butter. I don't mind Li'l Butter, but the cat does seem to be a one-note character. (S)he needs some more depth or dimension.

Two things: 1.) It would be AWESOME if Lil' Butter had some kind of "idiot savant" type super power. Maybe he could play piano, or something to make up for how stupid he is ... 2.) I love the "how garages were invented" comment ... I am SO guilty of keeping toys that my kids are WAY too old to play with ... LOL !

Did all of you miss this? It's 4 blocks, hardly worth getting upset about.
